Joumou Soup

Step into Haiti's history with our Joumou Soup, a spicy tribute to the freedom and resilience of the Haitian people


  • 1kg butternut squash, peeled and cut into pieces
  • 500g beef, cut into cubes
  • 2 carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 leek, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 beef bouillon cubes
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • A pinch of grated nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Water


  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until golden.
  2. Add the beef to the pot and brown it on all sides.
  3. Mix in the butternut squash, carrots, potatoes, leek, and celery. Stir well.
  4. Pour enough water into the pot to cover all the ingredients. Add the beef bouillon cubes, parsley, thyme, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  5. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for about 30 to 40 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the flavors have melded together.
  6. Serve this hot joumou soup to celebrate moments of togetherness with family or friends, savoring each spicy and comforting bite!
